When I was asked to review this Daniel Wellington watch, I must admit I was kind of excited. The amount of positive things I had heard around the web – especially on Twitter, and other social media sites made me wonder what could be so special about this minimalist watch. What had they done that was so different than so many other watch companies seeking to produce a watch with the perfect dimensions that would satisfy the discriminating palette of their target audience?
Here's a little history on the brand for those who may be interested. Daniel Wellington is a very recent brand, but with their savvy in design they have enjoyed early successes. The owner of Daniel Wellington watches is a man named Filip Tysander. He met Daniel Wellington (the man) in the British Isles. Tysander was impressed by the man's style and the fact that he wore his watches on NATO straps. Subsequently, the line of watches was named after Daniel Wellington.
Truth be told, after I had worn this watch for the time it took to me to write this paragraph, I must say it felt great. The weight is right there in that sweet spot between weighty and just too light. The case is simple enough with its rose gold ion plated aesthetic and polished finish. The small crown is ridged and fits perfectly in with the minimalist look. Personally, I don't wear gold but I can't deny that this does look great against my tanned skin. I might have to re-evaluate my position on rose gold. We'll see.
The case dimensions stand at 40mm for the diameter, and just 6mm for the thickness of the watch. What I thought was interesting about this watch was the caseback. It protrudes and actually succeeds in pushing the watch up a bit, making it seem more prominent on the wrist. I have seen something similar in the Longines Le Grande Classique models but not quite as noticeable. If it's one thing I'll give Daniel Wellington is that they've done their homework.
Another unique aspect to this design is the shape of the lugs. To me, they look like reversed horn shaped lugs, and like everything else they are very minimalist in their design. With the lugs the case measurements jump to 47mm. The band is made of genuine dark brown leather with some slightly lighter brown contrast saddle stitching. Securing the strap is a rose gold ion plated stainless steel clasp. This watch is clearly designed for dress and as such the water resistance offered is minimal – only 30 meters (3 Bars).
The dial is white with rose gold toned hands and hour markers. The hour markers are applied, whereas the minute markers that run along the flange are printed in black. Due to its simple layout, readability on the Daniel Wellington 0111DW is fantastic. The only other marking on the dial is the Daniel Wellington logo and brand name between 12 and the center of the dial. Everything seems to be very precise when it comes to this brand, and I predict that it will continue to do well. Governing the inner workings of this watch is an accurate Japanese made quartz movement.
